Picnic is Costa Rica’s big-format festival: two Saturdays, four stages at Pedregal in Belén, and a lineup that runs from pop royalty to reggaetón to the electronic corner at the Klan Destino stage. It’s not a rave — it’s the day the whole GAM dresses up and stands in a field from afternoon to midnight. Which is its own packing problem, and unlike our other Costa Rica guides, this one comes with a real, published gate list.
The 2026 edition ran Saturday March 14 and Saturday March 21 at Pedregal, 18+, tickets via eticket.cr. As we write this, 2027 dates haven’t been announced — watch the festival’s official channels.
What the gate list actually says
For 2026 the organizers published both lists (reported by El Observador). Banned: weapons, external batteries, drones, sharp objects, vapes and lighters, coins, binoculars, umbrellas of any kind, outside food and drink, professional and semi-professional cameras, selfie sticks, cups and thermoses, drugs, and folding chairs.
Explicitly allowed: sunglasses, a hat or cap, small sunscreen, a sweater or jacket, lip balm, and makeup.
Read those two lists together and the festival is telling you exactly how to dress. No umbrellas plus March sun means the shade you bring is what you wear: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen — all three explicitly allowed. No cups or thermoses plus no outside drinks means hydration happens at the venue’s bars — so our hydration pack, genuinely great in the jungle at Envision, stays home for this one. (Long-time readers will notice this is the third guide in which we’ve told you not to bring one of our own products. We keep doing it because it keeps being true.)
The power bank problem
“Baterías externas” — external batteries — are on the banned list. That’s your phone’s backup power gone, so walk in at 100% and treat the battery like water in the desert: low-power mode, no livestreaming Maná.
It also puts powered light-up gear in a grey zone. Our LED pieces run on built-in rechargeables, not power banks — but a security line reads lists literally, and we can’t promise how “batería externa” gets interpreted at the bag check when your goggles have a battery pack on a cable. If you want light, ask the festival first. If you want zero conversations at the gate, the gate-proof kit is the unpowered kind: hair tinsel, holographic fabric, and makeup — which is explicitly on the allowed list, so go ahead and commit to the look.
Dressing for noon-to-midnight
Pedregal in March is dry-season Central Valley: hard sun all afternoon, genuinely cool once the sun drops. The gate list has your back here — “suéter o abrigo” is explicitly allowed — so the play is a light outfit with a layer that packs small. A hooded windbreaker or the men’s version ties around your waist all day and earns its place at 8pm. If your night ends at the electronic stage, a hoodie is the warmer answer.
Day side: a tee, a two-piece or a crop top — twelve hours on your feet rewards clothes you forget you’re wearing. On bags: the published lists don’t give a bag size rule, and we won’t invent one. A small soft bag has never been the wrong call at any festival — a fanny pack or thigh bag carries phone, card and sunscreen and gets through a pat-down without a discussion. Leave the backpack in the car.
One more from the banned list that catches people: no selfie sticks, and no folding chairs — this is a standing festival. And smokers, note that lighters are banned too.
Check it yourself before you pack
The lists above were published for the 2026 edition, and organizers revise rules every year — sometimes between the two Saturdays. When 2027 goes on sale, read the conditions on your eticket purchase page and the festival’s official announcements before you pack. The short version
- Hat + sunglasses + small sunscreen. Umbrellas are banned; your shade is worn.

- 18+, and 2027 dates are unannounced as we write — verify everything at purchase.
